Antônia Bezerra Leão

Antonia Bezerra Leão was born in 1914 in Tracunhaém, Pernambuco State. When she was ten years old, she would make little clay animal figures that her father sold in Carpina (PE) market. When she was 15, she married and moved to Goiana, where a friar “Seu Luis”, taught her to work with clay. Since then, she created images of saints, as well as animal figures and miniature domestic earthenware. She used aluminium, bamboo and iron spatulas to model her figures and then baked them after drying. Her figures were unpainted or with no decoration, and had recurring biblical themes. She is deceased.
