They are street vendors offering merchandise and services. Even today, they can be found in the large urban centres and small inland towns of Brazil. Peddlers are often represented in folk art, and are not bound to labour laws – they do not pay taxes, are not registered or authorised to work and do not receive the benefits of formal employment.
