Noemisa

Noemisa Batista dos Santos was born in 1947 in the vicinity of Caraí, Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais State. She was very young when her mother, a pot maker, would teach her how to model clay. She created her own style and themes, with stunningly beautiful scenes of baptism and weddings. She uses white clay to obtain contrasting effects on the colour of baked clay. Special features of her work include flowers and other details that vie for attention with the main theme. Although very well known with a reputation for being one of the most creative artists in her region, she lives on her own and in dire economic straits.
