Heleno Manuel

Heleno Manuel da Silva was born in 1933 in the village of Alto do Moura, Caruaru, Pernambuco State. He belonged to the first generation of ceramists whose work was decisive for the transformation of Caruaru as the main centre of figurative ceramics in Brazil. His production was vast and his characters outstanding for their simplicity and expressive force. In the 1980s, he became partner with the talented artist Zé Rodrigues when the work of both became much more standardized. From then on it was hard to differentiate between each other’s work. He was 66 years old when he died in his home town.
